Join Us for the Soak it Up! Exhibition

The Green City, Clean Waters program is bringing green stormwater infrastructure to neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. Have you wondered what these projects will look like or how they work? The Philadelphia Water Department, the Community Design Collaborative and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)have partnered to host Infill Philadelphia: Soak It Up! a national competition to design stormwater management tools for Philadelphia and explore their potential for revitalizing our neighborhoods. The competition concluded in March with the presentation of illustrations and renderings of innovative stormwater infrastructure designs.Now you can see the ideas that resulted from the competition on display at City Hall from October 7th through December 7th on the 2nd and 4th floors.An opening reception to celebrate the exhibit will be held on Tuesday, October 15th from 5pm to 7pm in the Council Caucus Room, 4th floor. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP through Eventbrite. To visit the exhibit any other time, use the visitors’ entrance on the northeast corner Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, starting October 7th.

Fishing for Some Fun

Saturday, September 7th was a picture –perfect fall day for the 9th annual Fish Fest. Over 100 anglers of all different ages came out to Schuylkill Banks to compete for Smallest Fish, Largest Fish, and Most Fish Caught. Judges awarded prizes such as deluxe tackle boxes and rods from Plano and Dick’s Sporting Goods to the lucky winners. In total, fishers hauled in eighty-one fish and six different species including Channel Catfish, Bluegill, Striped Bass, American Eel, American Shad and White Perch.


The Philadelphia Water Department partners with the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, Fish & Boat Commission, and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation to host Fish Fest each year.

Water Commissioner Speaks at Water for Jobs Summit

The Water Department’s Commissioner, Howard Neukrug, was a keynote speaker last Tuesday, April 16th, at the Water for Jobs Summit in Washington, D.C. The two-hour event streamed live as Commissioner Neukrug spoke of the workforce challenges facing the water industry with retirement of the baby boomers and an incoming of the new millenials. The summit featured dialogue from leaders in local and state governments, as well as the private sector. They shared their perspectives on the economic need for resilient water infrastructure systems to meet the challenges of today and the future. The summit identified green stormwater infrastructure as a top national priority, as well as the importance of reinvesting  in water to create jobs, drive innovation, and safeguard public health.

Free Yard Trees from TreePhilly

Did you know that planting trees is one of the easiest, most effective ways to manage stormwater? Even better - you can do it for free! 

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation (PP&R) is making it easy for you to green your neighborhood. Through the TreePhilly campaign, sponsored by Wells Fargo, PP&R is offering Philadelphia property owners a free yard tree. These yard trees help clean the air, lower energy costs, manage stormwater and beautify neighborhoods.  TreePhilly supports Philadelphia’s goals to increase trees in the city and Plant One Million, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s campaign to plant one million trees in 13 counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

If you have open land and would like a free tree, file a request online by March 31st. PP&R will hold nine pick-up events at different locations throughout the city between April 6th and 20th. Tree species included in the spring giveaway are: Sweetbay Magnolia, Serviceberry, Pawpaw, American Plum, American Hornbeam, Flowering Dogwood, Eastern Redbud, Boxelder, Black Gum, and Tulip Tree.

What's the future of Philadelphia's waterways?

Wrapping up the Infill Philadelphia: Soak it Up! design initiative, special guest Eric Sanderson, director of the Mannahatta Project, will host a conversation on Thursday, March 21st about the future of urban waterways at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.

The evening will also include an overview of the Green City, Clean Waters program by Marc Cammarata, director of PWD's Office of Watersheds, and the winners of the Soak It Up! Design competition will present their ideas for the future of green infrastructure in Philadelphia. 

The event will run from 6:30 to 8:00pm, with a networking reception at 5:30. You can register here.

Winners of the Infill Philadelphia: Soak It Up! design competition were announced last Thursday to a packed room at the Academy of Natural Sciences last Thursday. This national, interdisciplinary design competition challenged designers, engineers, and other sustainability professionals to show how green stormwater infrastructure can transform our City. Over 320 people attended the ceremony celebrating the winners, chosen from three design categories.

In the Industrial category, a team led by Roofmeadow won with their design, "Leveraging Water + Plants in Zero Lot Sites." 

For the Neighborhood category, focused on Queen Village neighborhood, a team led by the landscape architecture firm OLIN, won with their design, "Greening the Grid." 

The winner of the Commercial retrofit category was "Stormwater reStore" led by Urban Engineers Inc.

Reel Good Time: Photos from the 2012 Philly Fun Fishing Fest

Last weekend's Philly Fun Fishing Fest was, um, off the hook. Nearly 100 participants came to the Schuylkill banks, and the fish were definitely biting. A total of 225 fish were caught; 10 different species were hauled in during the catch-and-release event, including striped bass, white perch, yellow perch, channel catfish, white catfish, small-mouthed bass, blue gill, alewife, spot and blueback herring.

Northern Liberties Chooses Its Spokesdog: Scooter!

On Saturday, Philly Water got another new best friend: Meet Scooter, the Schnauzer/Beagle mix who took home the title of Northern Liberties spokesdog. Above, Dee Ross of the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary affixes Scooter's new spokesdog cape as owners Julia Vu and Gary Acers look on. As spokesdog, Scooter will teach humans to pick up dog waste in order to protect our waterways from harmful bacteria. Congratulations to Scooter and all the participants!

Good Dogs: Photos from the Queen Village Spokesdog Competition

Here's our photo essay from last weekend's Philly Water's Best Friend competition at Mario Lanza Park in Queen Village. Thanks to all the dog owners, judges, volunteers and neighbors who turned out for a fun event that was part doggie pageant and part quiz show—above, Betty the pug tackles a tough question from the judges about keeping our waterways clean by picking up pet waste. Nice job, Betty.

And a reminder—the Northern Liberties spokesdog competition is tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Liberty Lands.
