Fishin' Around

Ever wonder what kinds of fish are fishin’ around in the Schuylkill River? Take a peek into the underwater world at the Fairmount Water Works’ lab to learn how fish can be biological indicators of the health of the river. Participants will discover that understanding the river’s ecosystem can help us provide safe and high quality tap water. After the lesson, participants can practice the traditional Japanese art form of Gyotaku (fish printing).

Science Saturday events will be held at the Fairmount Water Works every Saturday this March from 2pm-4pm every half hour.

To learn more about this Science Saturday and other exciting things going on at the Fairmount Water Works, read their latest newsletter.

Family Holiday Pop-Up Activities

Trying to find something exciting for the family during the holidays? Look no further! The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center will have family holiday pop-up activities starting this weekend!

Participants will explore the different properties of water, including the states of matter, and participate in an activity to make their own snow globes to take home.

The Holiday Pop-Up Activities will take place on December 21, 24, 26, and 27 from 10am to noon and from 2pm-4pm.

Times are subject to change. Please call 215-685-0723 to confirm the timing.

The Water Works presents... TRIBUTARIES: A Modern Cantata

The Fairmount Water Works is having an enchanting musical performance by the TRIBUTARIES at the Water Works’ historical New Mill House this Saturday, December 14th at 4pm!

Captured in the tradition of American tonal concert music, “TRIBUTARIES: A Modern Cantata”, explores man’s biological and technological dependence on water, as well as the many life enabling and yet threatening powers of water. From the perspective of three of Eastern Pennsylvania’s many tributaries, each of which converge into the Schuylkill River, the audience is immersed in water and the life and times of nearby inhabitants, through a unique and site-specific musical performance.

The act features solo and ensemble performances from some of Philadelphia’s brightest vocal talent and an octet of diverse musicians. Craig Hendrix, composer, conductor and founder of The Agave Opera Company collaborates with film composers Brooke and Will Blair and Habithèque Inc. to bring the TRIBUTARIES to life!

Craft Beer of Philly at the Interpretive Center

On Wednesday, June 26th, the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center will host “Craft Brewing in Philadelphia: Past, Present and Future” from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Rich Wagner has been studying the history of brewing in Philadelphia since 1980 and is the author of Philadelphia Beer, a Heady History of Brewing in the Cradle Liberty (History Press 2012). He will share the turbulent history of Philadelphia’s breweries, like when the Schmidt brewery closed in 1987 and for the first time Philadelphia found itself without a brewery. Since then new, small breweries have emerged and made themselves prominent in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Today, the City is home to two operating production facilities. Join us to learn more about Philadelphia’s reputation as a world class brewing center as well as intensive tradition and heritage behind the modern day practices.

This event will include the opportunity to sample several of Philadelphia’s craft beers, so attendees must b over 21 years of age. To order tickets, please visit –

Mussel Mania!

posted in

Mussels may be small, but they are mighty! Join us on May 11th at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, for Mussel Mania, an indoor/outdoor event to honor and appreciate the tiny creatures that call the Delaware Basin home. Did you know these small species that inhabit our local river are some of the most important tools for protecting and preserving our water ways? These mussels, known as bivalves, absorb wave energy, protect salt marshes, trap sediment and reduce bank erosion. They provide our rivers with many ecosystem services such as water filtration, habitat creation and carbon sequestration. Sadly, of the 12 native species in the Delaware River Basin, almost all are considered reduced, threaten or even extinct. The main causes of their decline are loss of habitat and pollution.

However, several local organizations are working to change that. At Mussel Mania, Dr. Danielle Kreeger, Science Director for the Partnerships for the Delaware Estuary, will explain all you need to know about mussels. Lance Butler, Watershed Protection Manager for the Philadelphia Water Department will discuss his team’s work and why these bivalves have piqued our interest. Finally, the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership will share the results of last years’ mussel survey, and provide hands on assistance during the afternoon stream examination! The day will end on a delicious note with a beer and (you guessed it) mussels! To learn more you can call 215-685-0721. The cost is $12 , which includes transportation to the stream site, reception and basic supplies. Tickets are available online
