Lancaster Avenue ReStore Corridor

Intro
Green Street Demonstration Project on Lancaster Avenue, from 59th Steet to 63rd Street.
Project Description

Aerial view of the project area.

The Philadelphia Water Department worked with the Commerce Department and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation on a project that was part of the City’s ReStore Corridors program, in which certain commercial corridors’ streetscapes were retrofitted. The design for the streetscape retrofit constructed by PWD, in collaboration with the project partners, includes a vegetated swale leading into a corner triangle, a stormwater bump-out, and a stormwater tree trench. The Lancaster ReStore Corridors project partnership resulted in a green street which improved the appearance of this commercial corridor in West Philadelphia. The drainage area for this project is 72,500 square feet resulting in the mitigation of 4, 5194 gallons of stormwater runoff. The project was managed by PIDC and was completed in October, 2010.

Watershed Benefits

  • Mitigates runoff from impervious surfaces within the public right-of-way
  • Provides demonstration projects to inform larger-scale, long-term program
  • Additional landscaping and tree canopy cover provide visual interest, aesthetic
appeal, and mitigate the urban heat island effect
  • Improves the appearance of important neighborhood commercial corridors
