The Philadelphia Zoo

Intro
The Philadelphia Zoo is the country’s first zoo, is home to approximately 1,300 animals, rare and endangered, and it also boasts green stormwater infrastructure that captures runoff from the street as visitors enter the zoo on Girard Avenue.
Project Description

Zoo

This green street project resulted from the opportunity to add additional stormwater management to a Philadelphia Zoo project consisting of streetscape improvements, a private cost water/sewer job, and new parking garage.

PWD installed rain gardens along the north side of Girard Avenue between 38th street and 39th street. They are located in the lawn area between the sidewalk and the Zoo Giraffe parking lot. Subsurface stone infiltration trenches and a stormwater planter were also installed along the south side of Girard Avenue and by the parking garage.
