Philadelphia Water's Fairmount Water Works and the Global Water Alliance will host a World Toilet Day event at the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center in Manayunk on Thursday, November 17 from 6-8 p.m.

World Toilet Day, which takes place on November 19, raises awareness about the billions of people around the world struggling with sanitation issues and inspires people lucky enough to live in places (like Philly) with clean water to take action.
According to the Global Water Alliance, “2.4 billion people are struggling to stay well, keep their children alive and work their way to a better future—all for the want of a toilet.”

As members of the water community and founding members of the GWA, PWD and Fairmount Water Works want to help the Alliance with their efforts by hosting this fundraiser. (RSVP here.)

The Venice Island facility is a fitting location for this World Toilet Day event, too: thanks to work completed in 2014, the new building plays an important role in keeping tens of millions of gallons of polluted water and untreated sewage from the Schuylkill River each year through the use of special infrastructure that stores stormwater and prevents sewer overflows. Read more about Venice Island’s water infrastructure and pumping station here.

This event is open to the public and will feature:

• A buffet and live music

• A tour of the underground stormwater collection system at Venice Island

• A presentation on the composting toilet and its pros/cons, costs, and scalability

• Highlights from a report on the first 10 years of the Global Water Alliance

The evening is free, but donations are encouraged to help fund GWA sanitation and drinking water access efforts around the world.

The Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center is located on the Schuylkill River at Canal and Lock streets in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood.
