Project Description
The Trust for Public Land expressed interest in renovating Lanier Playground. Philadelphia Water was interested in managing runoff from the surrounding neighborhood streets at this park, and the proposed renovations provided an ideal opportunity to align with the surface improvements. Philadelphia Water is currently installing a large subsurface storage basin beneath the fields, and the Trust for Public Land and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation will begin construction on surface improvements once the basin is in place. Philadelphia Water has been able to partner with the Trust for Public Land due to a contribution from the State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Not only will these green tools help improve the water quality in the Schuylkill watershed, this project will also provide the community with a new baseball field, new playground and exercise equipment, a picnic area, and a rain garden.
This project is part of our Green City, Clean Waters program, a 25-year plan to protect and enhance our watersheds by managing stormwater with innovative green infrastructure. Click here to download our Green City, Clean Waters overview handout.

Watershed Benefits
The subsurface basin will be able to manage a large amount of stormwater runoff from the surrounding neighborhood. The amount of Greened Acres will ultimately depend on testing during the design of the pipe network that will bring stormwater to the park. This will occur in the third phase of the project, after the basin is constructed and the park is renovated.
Construction Details
Timeline - Construction of Lanier Playground will occur in phases. The stormwater basin will be installed first, followed by the construction of the playground. Construction of the storage basin is expected to be completed in the Summer of 2016, and improvements to the playground are slated to begin in the Fall of 2016.
Maintenance
Once the project is complete, Philadelphia Water will maintain the stormwater pipe network and subsurface basin associated with the project at Lanier Playground.
