The Big Green Map Gets An Upgrade

posted in

The Big Green Map is now bigger, greener and ... mappier. The Philadelphia Water Department is working all around the city to implement green stormwater infrastructure such as porous paving, stormwater tree trenches and rain gardens, just to name a few. Check out our interactive, up-to-date Big Green Map to find out where PWD has either completed construction on a project or has one in the design phase. Each of these projects is a tool in preventing runoff from overburdening Philadelphia's sewer system and keeping our rivers and streams clean by preventing combined sewer overflows.

In all, there are nearly 200 green infrastructure projects either completed or in design—be sure to zoom in on the map to see all the points appear in a given area, navigate the right-hand menu to view specific project types, and click on the green dots for more information on each project and a link to more information.

New Video: 2011 Drinking Water Scholastic Awards

Photo: Schuylkill Action Network

In May, the Schuylkill Action Network held its 2011 Drinking Water Scholastic Awards at the Upper Perkiomen School District Education Center. Students (not pictured above, although those are actual children and that is the Schuylkill in the background) presented the various ways in which they're doing their part to keep the Schuylkill River free of pollutants and helping to protect a precious source of drinking water; projects ranged from construction of rain gardens and riparian buffers to water testing and educational videos.

Conservationist Crew Cracks Cobbs Creek Chlorine Case

Photo: Tom Avril/Philadelphia Inquirer

We neglected to mention this Philadelphia Inquirer story from two weeks ago, in which a group of teenaged summer interns at the Cobbs Creek Environmental Education Center solved the mystery of a fish kill in the West Philadelphia waterway. Following the creek upstream, 10th grader Kamal Gatewood (pictured, above) caught the scent of chlorine, originating from the drainage pipe of a municipal swimming pool.

"'We could smell it from about 20 feet away,' the 15-year-old [Gatewood] said.

The trio said they tested the drainage water with a portable test kit. They added chemicals to their water samples, causing them to change color, which they then checked on a chart that revealed the chlorine level. It read more than five parts per million. Fish can be killed by levels less than one-tenth that amount, according to a Duke University website. However, those readings were taken directly from the drainage pipe; the water in the creek was much more diluted.

At the suggestion of Singh and Kurnick, sewer repair workers agreed to move the pipe so it drained into a sewer grate."

Stay tuned for more news on this watershed detective work.

This Place Is BMPing: Thomas Jefferson University Plaza

Each week, we profile a BMP—short for Best Management Practices—to demonstrate how local businesses, organizations and neighbors are helping to keep our streams and rivers clean by managing stormwater on their property.

Image: Andropogon Associates, Inc.

The plaza outside Thomas Jefferson University's Dorrance H. Hamilton Building (located between 10th and 11th; Locust and Walnut streets) is an example of green stormwater infrastructure that's barely visible to the naked eye. The system constructed here collects water from the building's roof and air conditioner condensation and stores it in a cistern underneath the plaza. Just one inch of stormwater is enough to water the 1.6-acre plaza's plants and trees for a week. Click on the image above for a larger version.

Learn more about this stormwater BMP project, find it on a map and view photos at  the Temple-Villanova Sustainable Stormwater Initiative project page.

View From The Pontoon Boat

posted in

Sometimes we talk about water cleanliness and river health in abstract-sounding ways: in terms of pollutants, sediment and dissolved oxygen levels. But the Philadelphia Water Department also takes the obvious route to cleaner waterways. Behold the view from our pontoon boat, which patrols the Schuylkill River from the Strawberry Mansion Bridge to Boathouse Row once a week from May to October (weather permitting), collecting "floatables": trash skimmed from the river. The most common floatables are plastic bags, styrofoam and plastic bottles (which are separated on the boat for recycling), but according to PWD's Jim D'Agostino, there's also the occasional car tire, household door, children's toy, bicycle and even a lawnmower. The photo above is from yesterday's outing; another shot of the pontoon boat after the jump.

Tacony Creek Stream Clean-Up

Photo: Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership

Come out to Tacony Creek Park on Friday, July 29 and be part of a clean-up crew that includes the Philadelphia Water Department, Parks & Recreation and the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership. From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we'll be removing trash and debris from a section of the creek to improve the waterway's health and preserve access to the Tacony. Last month's clean-up at the Juniata Golf Course (pictured above) was a huge success. Meet at the corner of E. Ashdale St. and Bingham St. to participate; email ashley@ttfwatershed.org for more information.

Update: Waders, gloves and refreshments will be provided.

Life Aquatic: Snapping Turtle

posted in

Who's afraid of a little (or, in some cases, actually quite large) snapping turtle? Not Philadelphians, who made dinner out of Cheldyra serpentina for decades in the form of snapper soup, a staple at city restaurants such as the Oyster House and the late Bookbinder's. The truth about snapping turtles is probably somewhere in between; these freshwater turtles can be ill-tempered when out of the water, and their bite can cause severe injury. The snapping evolved as a defense mechanism, as Cheldyra serpentina does not have the ability to retreat into its shell. However, when in the water, snapping turtles are docile and will seldom attack humans.

This spring, PWD biologists spotted two snapping turtles in the lower reaches of Tookany Creek (which becomes Tacony Creek within Philadelphia city limits). These turtles—whose carapaces, or shells, can grow to 20 inches in length—prefer to inhabit muddy areas of slow-running streams, lakes or ponds, and they can survive up to 30 years in the wild.
