Concrete and asphalt — not exactly materials you associate with the beauty of spring in Philadelphia, right?

In addition to being unpleasant to look at, these materials contribute to the urban “heat island” effect, amplify noise pollution, and divert water from storms into our (often overwhelmed) sewer system instead of allowing it to slowly filter into the ground naturally.

That last problem—the water-repelling or “impervious” nature of roofs, driveways, sidewalks and concrete-covered backyards—is something that Philadelphia Water has been working to address through our Rain Check program. By educating and working with homeowners through Rain Check, we’ve made hundreds of properties in the city not only more beautiful, but also better at managing stormwater that can damage homes and pollute our waterways. We’ve also given away over 4,000 free rain barrels to Philadelphia residents since 2006.

Over the last decade, we’ve seen an increasingly diverse group of people working to support Philadelphia Water’s programs and infrastructure, something the City has worked hard to achieve.

Between 2008 and 2015, minority, women, and disabled owned business (M/W/DSBEs) participation commitments for all Philadelphia Water contracts have more than doubled, allowing us to achieve our 30 percent participation target in Fiscal Year 2015.

While the inclusive nature of our Green City, Clean Waters program is part of what has been driving that trend, we want to increase M/W/DSBE participation in all aspects of our work. And we want to make sure all qualified local small businesses and contractors interested in working with us have all the information they need to get started.

On March 22, Philadelphia Water is hosting a special installment of our Contractor Seminar series that will give contractors from all backgrounds the opportunity to meet with Debra A. McCarty, the first woman to lead the department in its 200-year history. She was appointed Commissioner by Mayor Kenney in January.

Ambitious Proposal Could Mean Big Improvements for Morris Park, Local Water Quality

Philadelphia Water is looking for residents to provide feedback tonight on designs for a pretty impressive green infrastructure project at Papa Playground in Morris Park that aims to improve the area’s stormwater management and urban habitat while reducing combined sewer overflows that can spill polluted water into our rivers and streams:

The design for improvements that will be presented at Papa Rec Center tonight at 6:30 p.m. are for a project that disconnects several streets in the Overbrook neighborhood from the City’s combined sewer system, sending clean water to the adjacent park’s creek. As part of the Green City, Clean Waters program, this collaboration with the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation department and the Department of Public Property adds natural landscaping to the park while taking pressure off the combined sewer system.

Francis Myers Recreation Center is a big, beautiful Philadelphia Parks and Recreation site in Southwest Philly.

For Philadelphia Water, that big rec center presents a big opportunity to manage the site’s stormwater, which can overwhelm local sewers when it rains and lead to sewage overflows that pollute our rivers.

That’s why we’re thrilled to be working with Parks and Recreation and the community to create green stormwater infrastructure for the area through our Green City, Clean Waters program. In addition to catching and filtering stormwater with plants, soil and stone, these important upgrades will also beautify the area, making Francis Myers a greener and even more inviting place for all residents.

Have Frozen Pipes? You Might Have to Call a Plumber

When bitter cold sets in like this, it's not uncommon for pipes to freeze.

We've been pushing out tips for prevention, but sometimes freezing occurs because home plumbing is above the frost line or pipes are near drafty basement windows. We're getting calls from some customers without water — but there's no water main break or other apparent issue in their area.

If this is happening to you, check with your neighbor and see if they have water. If the problem is isolated to your house, there's a good chance frozen pipes are to blame. If this happens:

A final Public Input Hearing for the proposed 2016-17 rate change will take place Thursday, April 7 at 8:30 a.m. in City Council Chambers at City Hall on the 4th Floor. You are encouraged to attend and submit testimony. If you are unable to attend, you can submit written comments until April 18.
