Rain Barrel Workshops are Coming Up!

The Philadelphia Water Department and the Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA) are providing free rain barrels to Philadelphians.  Rain barrels work by capturing stormwater through disconnected downspouts that collect rain water from roofs. Water that flows into the rain barrel can then be used for irrigating our gardens, window boxes and  and lawn watering.

To receive your free rain barrel complete with installation,  attend a rain barrel workshop. These workshops are held in locations around the city throughout the year.

To learn more about the rain barrel program and to see if there are workshops near you, visit phillywatersheds.org/rainbarrel.

Also, check out PWD at next week’s Climate Smart: Artists Respond to Climate Change event. Chris Anderson from the Water Department Public Affairs Division will be participating. For more information: https://www.facebook.com/events/516312131812239/?ref=22

It’s Time to Apply for Project Flow

Are you currently an 8th or 9th grader? If so, Fairmount
Water Works and Germantown Friends School invite you to apply to Project Flow!

This five-week summer program allows students to learn about
Philadelphia’s water system, its waterways and infrastructure. As they

Project Flow also has several opportunities for both hands-on experimental
programs onsite and offsite, such as field trips, boating, nature walks, and
camping. Additionally, the program includes an artistic and journalistic
focused photography project.

Students are selected through an application process.  Project Flow is a no-cost program.  However, if accepted for the program, there
is a suggested activities fee.

Applications are due by April 15, 2014.

All students accepted to the program will be notified by April 30, 2014

Urban Watersheds Curriculum Guide

The Fairmount Water Works, Philadelphia Water Department, Schuylkill Action Network, Environmental Protection Agency, EcoExpress, and the Partnership for Delaware Estuary released the Urban Watersheds Curriculum Guide this past year. This primary audience for the guide is K-8 educators. The curriculum guide takes students through a fascinating and complex narrative with its twist and turns, describing the urban water system. Those interested are individuals interested in making a connections between one of our most fundamental elements in life – water – and all of the complexities and responsibilities associated with accessing it, using it, cleaning it up and returning it to our waterways.

Both Nebinger School and Greenfield School tested the guide. Nebinger’s Middle School teacher, Rachel Odoroff, positively described her experience: “The lesson brings critical issues to life for students in a manner that is fun, engaging and meaningful,” she says, “At Nebinger Elementary, our students have welcomed this content, especially as they could draw, create, observe, experiment and discuss along the way!”

Keep Our Water Flowing

posted in

Ah, Spring! Warm weather, birds singing, blooming flowers, no water… What! No Water? We don’t want that to happen!

Beginning April 1, 2014, the Philadelphia Water Department will begin shutting off water service for those who are behind on their water bill. Water is an essential part of our day to day activities, so it is important that we work together to keep our water flowing.

If you get a shutoff notice, do not delay. Call 215-686-6880 to make payment arrangements or go online to pay your bill immediately. If a PWD worker comes to your door, you will have to pay at least 50% of the outstanding balance, plus a visitation fee to avoid shutoff. In addition, a larger fee will be required if your water is shut off and you want it restored.

Let’s work together to make sure you always have running water.

If selected, the Regional Science Consortium plans to use the grant money to support the Weather, Water and Wave Buoy System that will be deployed this May in the Pennsylvania waters of Lake Erie. This buoy will provide real-time data (every 20 minutes) on the lake conditions that everyone can access. The buoy system will be a tremendous benefit to the local community as well as to tourists.
