Urban What? Urban Forest!

posted in

What is an urban forest? It's the collection of trees that grow in an urban area. Urban tree canopy is important for both environmental and economic reasons, as it reduces stormwater runoff, improves air quality and raises property values. Philadelphia has an estimated 2.1 million trees, with canopy covering 15.7% of the city. Tree density amounts to roughly 25 trees per acre, which is comparable to tree density in other American cities such as San Francisco (22.5) and New York (26.4)

Recently, Philly Tree Map was launched to help build an inventory of the trees that make up the Philadelphia’s urban forest. This project is a result of a partnership between the City of Philadelphia, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission  and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS). Anyone can register for a free account to begin adding information to the database. Philly Tree Map uses a wiki-based structure that allows registered users to add data pertaining to tree size and species. Reliable users gain reputation points that add up to enable access to higher-level editing features. If you're not sure where to start, the FAQ section provides information on tree identification and measuring techniques. Also, this interview with Casey Combs of PHS offers insight to the development of project and its potential future uses.

Root For The Home Stream

"Root for the home estuary" doesn't have quite the same ring to it—but if you attend the June 25 Camden Riversharks game against the Pennsylvania Road Warriors (5:35 p.m. start), you can support the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. Purchase tickets for the game online and use the word "Estuary" as the group password, and $5 from each ticket will benefit the PDE. The total price of a ticket is $11.

Read our recent post about some of the projects the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary is proposing.

And also some views of the roof: Here are some photos from Wednesday's unveiling of the green roof bus shelter at 15th and Market.

What's An Estuary Worth? About $10 Billion/Yr

Map of 2011 priority projects for the Delaware Estuary (Image: Partnership for the Delaware Estuary)

A recent study by the University of Delaware puts a price tag on the economic value of the Delaware Estuary—the tidal portion of the Delaware River Basin—and the number is big. An estimated $10 billion flows annually from the economic activity and water-related jobs the estuary provides for a half-million people in the tri-state area. The results of the study were announced earlier this month by the nonprofit Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, and the implications are far-reaching in terms of project planning, policy decisions and future investment.

News Stream: Media Coverage of the Green Roof Bus Shelter

posted in

News outlets were buzzing about the debut of Philly's first green roof bus shelter yesterday. Here's a roundup of some of the articles.

Philadelphia Inquirer:

"'We basically see this project as an opportunity to inspire homeowners,' said Tiffany Ledesma Groll, the project's coordinator. 'A lot of the green roofs that are really fabulous and gorgeous are on high-rises' - invisible to most. 'We thought it would be fun to bring it down to eye level.'"

Newsworks:

Roofmeadow Inc., a Philadelphia company, designed, constructed and will maintain the garden free of charge. Charlie Miller, the company's president, told the crowd at the unveiling that he is 'excited about the possibility of replicating this type of garden throughout the city of Philadelphia.'"

Philly.com Green Space:

"A doghouse with a green roof? The Philadelphia Water Department's Chris Crockett says he's seen one. A little balcony with a green roof? Roofmeadows founder and president Charlie Miller says he's sure there is one."

Grid Magazine:

"Hopefully, this project is just the first in a series of city-wide bus shelter gardens. Doesn’t the thought of standing beneath the shade of blossoming greenery make waiting for the bus seem more bearable? Dare I say enjoyable?"

CBS Philly:

"It’s a deployable, prefabricated green roof, about the size of a living room rug. Mayor Nutter says it’s is a small example to show passersby a new type of city greening. 'That is truly amazing in helping to prevent polluted stormwater from going into our rivers,' he said."

Metro:

"It cost a donated $10,000 to put a garden atop one of the city’s 300 bus shelters. The city hopes to do more."

State of the City: Greenworks Turns Two

posted in

How's that "greenest city in America" thing coming along? Find out at the Urban Sustainability Forum on Thursday, June 16 at the Academy of Natural Sciences. The focus of the program is to update the public on the progress made toward achieving the goals outlined in Greenworks Philadelphia, the mayor's ambitious plan issued in 2009 to realize various sustainability targets. Among the 15 initiatives outlined in Greenworks are actions to lower energy consumption, retrofit houses for energy efficiency, improve air quality, divert solid waste from landfills, increase tree coverage, add green jobs and—because this is the Office of Watersheds blog, after all—better stormwater management. As Greenworks releases its second annual progress report, participants at the event will have the chance to rotate among 15 tables representing the sustainability target areas and learn what Philadelphia is doing to mobilize neighborhoods, partners and citizens to work together. Registration is free, and information can be found here.

Iodine-131: A Panel Discussion

posted in

Iodine-131 has been in the news lately, and PWD has been busy responding to media inquiries. Now is your chance to ask your own questions and voice concerns: Join us at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center on Wednesday, June 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a panel discussion about Iodine-131. We want to help Philadelphia residents understand what Iodine-131 is and how it affects them; representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection have been invited to participate as well.
