Urban Greening, Water Quality and Beer: Philadelphia Water at PHS’s South Street Pop Up Garden

As a part of ongoing efforts to showcase the success of Green City, Clean Waters over the last five years, we are partnering with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to host three nights of special events at the PHS Pop Up Garden at 15th and South Streets.

Baxter's Best, a beer brewed by Saint Benjamin Brewing Co. to highlight local water quality and the importance of protecting our rivers, will be on tap.

The garden opens to the public each evening at 5 p.m. with a full menu of food and drinks.
The fun will take place Monday, Sept. 12 through Wednesday, Sept. 14. See our event listings on Facebook + invite your friends: Facebook.com/PhillyH2O

Here’s what you can expect each evening:

Monday Sept. 12: Sign up for this special Rain Check workshop (6-7 p.m.) and enjoy a brew and some food while you learn about issues impacting our rivers and how adding a rain barrel or green infrastructure to your home can help. Taking this workshop allows residents to apply for a free rain barrel or discounted green tool, including downspout planters, rain gardens and more. Register for the workshop here.

Tuesday Sept. 13: Learn about efforts to protect our rivers while discovering the science around water quality and beer during Brewsday Tuesday at the Pop Up. Starting at 6:30 p.m., Saint Benjamin co-owner Tim Patton will talk about how the natural mineral qualities influence beer and brewing while showcasing Baxter's Best, an English-style session beer created to highlight the Delaware River's ideal brewing style. Gary Burlingame, director of the PWD Bureau of Laboratory Services, will talk about the Delaware River’s chemistry and explore ways in which taste and smell factor into drinking water treatment and science. Read about Baxter’s Best here.

Wednesday Sept. 14: A special presentation about what Philadelphia has achieved with green infrastructure since 2011 and what's in store for the next 20 years of protecting our waters through urban greening. At 6:30 p.m., Marc Cammarata, Director of the Office of Watersheds and interim Deputy Commissioner of Planning & Environmental Services, will be the featured speaker.

Guests will be able to watch a short video about the first five years of Green City, Clean Waters each night.

Proceeds from the PHS Pop Up Gardens support PHS programs, including City Harvest, which brings together a network of community gardeners who raise fresh, healthy food for more than 1,200 families in need each week during growing seasons.

We hope to see you on South Street!
