This Place Is BMPing: Saylors Grove

Each week, we profile a BMP—short for Best Management Practices—to demonstrate how local businesses, organizations and neighbors are helping to keep our streams and rivers clean by managing stormwater on their property.

Saylors Grove before renovation

Saylors Grove after the creation of a stormwater wetland

Before the Philadelphia Water Department constructed a stormwater wetland at Saylors Grove in Fairmount Park, the area received an excessive amount of runoff that drained into Monoshone Creek, a tributary to the Wissahickon, resulting in erosion of the Monoshone and impaired water quality. The creation of a one-acre wetland in 2006 now handles approximately 25 million gallons of urban stormwater each year, slowing the flow to the Monoshone and filtering the stormwater naturally by removing pollutants as the water cascades over rocks en route to the wetland.

PWD continues to monitor this stormwater wetland to determine the reduction in stormwater flow to the creek and analyze its performance. It is estimated that the wetland intercepts 73% of the watershed's annual runoff.

Learn more about this stormwater BMP project, find it on a map and view photos at  the Temple-Villanova Sustainable Stormwater Initiative project page. After the jump, another photo of the fully vegetated wetland.

This Saturday: Green Roofs 101

Want to know the basics behind green roofs? Join master gardener Stephanie Alarcon on Saturday, January 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Horticultural Center in Fairmount Park for a discussion on the fundamental issues in green roof planning. Topics include structural requirements, examples of pre-fab systems, plant choices and local green roof experts to contact. Registration ($10) and refreshments begin at 9:00 a.m., and the workshop commences at 9:30.

Free and Easy (and Mandatory): Upgrade Your Water Meter

posted in

The Philadelphia Water Department is working with Itron, a company that specializes in automatic meter readers, to upgrade water meters citywide over the next two years. Representatives from Itron will be visiting each neighborhood in the city to perform the free upgrade. The process takes less than 30 minutes and is mandatory—failure to upgrade your meter will result in an interruption of water service. Help us complete this upgrade: Allow the Itron representative into your home (he or she will be driving a vehicle and wearing a uniform with Itron and PWD insignia, and will also have an Itron and PWD identification badge). If you are not home during their visit, you may schedule an appointment.

Click here for more information on the upgrade and scheduling information.

Queen Village, Northern Liberties Spokesdog Competitions Are Under Way

Dog owners in Queen Village and Northern Liberties have unleashed their hounds (figuratively), as registration is now open for the 2012 Philly Water's Best Friend competition in those neighborhoods. To read about the prizes, perks and contest guidelines, check out the Spokesdog page, where you learn how picking up pet waste keeps our local waterways clean, enter your dog and size up the competition so far. Registration is open until Feb. 15, and the finalists will compete in a judging and awards ceremony in their respective neighborhoods.

11 For 2011: Green City, Clean Waters Gets the Green Light

PWD's Watersheds blog closes out the year with a list of 11 green missions accomplished in 2011, from innovative stormwater management projects and stream restorations to groundbreaking policy agreements and energy-generating solar arrays.

You can argue that the biggest win for Philadelphia's watersheds in 2011 wasn't a tangible project such as a rain garden, stream restoration, green roof or porous street—it was the approval of PWD's Green City, Clean Waters plan. Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and PWD met on June 1 to sign a consent agreement that validates the 25-year, $2 billion plan to manage Philadelphia's stormwater largely through green infrastructure. This historic agreement was celebrated with a tap-water toast. Cheers to the work accomplished in 2011 and expect to see even more Green City, Clean Waters projects in 2012.

11 For 2011: Bells Mill Stream Restoration

PWD's Watersheds blog closes out the year with a list of 11 green missions accomplished in 2011, from innovative stormwater management projects and stream restorations to groundbreaking policy agreements and energy-generating solar arrays.

PWD has been working to return streams to their natural state and create stable, healthy waterways able to sustain native vegetation and aquatic life. 2011 saw the restoration of Bells Mill—a 5,100-foot tributary to the Wissahickon—nearly completed, with grading and rock structures in place that will help stabilize the streambank and reduce erosion. With the addition of some landscaping in spring 2012, the project will be fully complete.

Elsewhere in the Wissahickon watershed, stormwater wetlands at Cathedral Run and Wises Mill began functioning this year. These wetlands mitigate the impact of stormwater flows, reduce the amount of sediment that ends up in the streams and increase the diversity of aquatic vegetation in those wetland areas.

11 For 2011: PWD's Solar Array

posted in

PWD's Watersheds blog closes out the year with a list of 11 green missions accomplished in 2011, from innovative stormwater management projects and stream restorations to groundbreaking policy agreements and energy-generating solar arrays.

In April, the City of Philadelphia unveiled its first solar photovoltaic system (above), located at PWD's Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant. The 250-kilowatt solar array consists of more than 1,000 panels covering 60,000 square feet, and its electricity will help power the energy-intensive task of water treatment. In October, the Mayor's Office of Sustainability reported that the solar array had already generated enough electricity to power 2.7 houses for a year.
