Germantown's First Green Street

Photo: PWD

What's that? What are they building on Belfield Avenue near Chew Street? Find out tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 14 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., as PWD Commissioner Howard Neukrug and Public Affairs Manager Joanne Dahme visit the Clearview Community Park to discuss two new stormwater management projects in Germantown. Refreshments will be served, followed by a tour of a former vacant lot turned into a native garden and a look at Germantown's first Green City, Clean Waters green street. Click here for more info.

OK, we will not leave you in suspense. Pictured above are storage crates for a stormwater tree trench. For previous projects, tree trenches were underlaid with a stone bed; PWD is using these modular storage crates for the first time on this site due to the crates' superior storage capacity and the limited available space.

Winning Websites: phillystormwater.org and phillyhistory.org

It is, apparently, awards season on the Internet: Two PWD-related websites have taken home honors for excellence. Last week, URISA named phillystormwater.org the 2011 winner of the Exemplary Systems in Government award:

"This solution was deemed exemplary by the ESIG Review Committee because it is an application that has benefited all stakeholders, including both the Philadelphia Water Department staff and the public alike. The System is an application in green stormwater management that uses GIS to assess impervious site areas. It gives the public easy access to—and transparency to—stormwater charges, and the ability to see the effect on their bills should property owners consider greener strategies. Processes have also been developed to address the data quality and consistency issues as they arise. The PhillyStormwater system has made a substantial impact on the new stormwater billing process and saved hundreds of hours for the Water Department staff members per month. The system is the largest of its type in the country and certainly is progressive in the way it charges for stormwater management costs."

Elsewhere, the American Association for State and Local History betowed an Award of Merit upon phillyhistory.org, a site whose collection of photographs and maps includes material from the Water Department's archives. The award was conferred based on the site's achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.

Congratulations to both websites and their caretakers.

This Place Is BMPing: Wises Mill Run Stormwater Wetland

Each week, we profile a BMP—short for Best Management Practices—to demonstrate how local businesses, organizations and neighbors are helping to keep our streams and rivers clean by managing stormwater on their property.

Photo: Friends of the Wissahickon

Wises Mill Run, a tributary of Wissahickon Creek, is a waterway that's severely impacted by stormwater flows. After storms, the nearby neighborhood's storm sewers discharge a large volume of water into Wises Mill Run, resulting in erosion of the creek's bed. The Philadelphia Water Department led a project to divert runoff from the storm sewer into a two-tiered stormwater wetland that can hold 150,000 cubic feet of water. This wetland reduces peak flows to the creek by storing runoff before discharging it into the creek. The photo above depicts the wetland at work after Hurricane Irene.

Scenes From (After) A Storm: Fairmount Water Works

Photo: Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center

There's no shortage of flooding stories in the region this week, all due to historic precipitation and flood-stage levels for the Delaware, Schuykill and many other waterways. Even the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center (pictured above) isn't immune to a good soaking; to be fair, however, the Interpretive Center was designed with flooding in mind due to its close proximity to the Schuylkill. Below, an Eastern Garter Snake finds some high ground in the Interpretive Center. Check out the FWWIC's Facebook page for more great photos.

Fishing Fest Postponed

posted in

This just in—due to inclement weather, the 2011 Philly Fun Fishing Fest scheduled for this Saturday is tentatively postponed until Saturday, September 24. We'll have more details on the postponement shortly. If you have registered for the fishing fest, you will be notified of scheduling updates by e-mail.

You're Invited: Engineers Without Borders Fall Fundraiser

posted in

Engineers Without Borders is holding its fall fundraiser on Thursday, September 29 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center. Engineers Without Borders is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that implements sustainable projects to improve quality of life in communities worldwide; one of EWB's many initiatives is to increase global access to safe water. Learn more about the fundraiser here—the event will include updates on water/sanitation projects in Rwanda, El Salvador and the Phillipines; silent auctions; a tapas menu and an open wine and beer bar. (Did we just bold that?) It's also a great networking opportunity. General admission is $40; $25 for current EWB student members. All proceeds directly fund EWB projects, including digging wells, building toilets and installing cisterns.

News Stream: WHYY Speaks for the Trees

On yesterday's edition of Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane, the topic of discussion was trees—planting and protecting Philadelphia's trees from pests and diseases. Listen to the program here; one of the many benefits of urban tree planting, says Pennsylvania Horticultural Society president Drew Becher, is that "it is one of the cheapest, easiest ways in order to ... help us with our stormwater issue."

Also, be sure to check out phillytreemap, a site where users can help map Philadelphia's tree canopy (pictured above) and examine the benefits (economic, air quality, water) provided by trees.

Philly's First Porous Street 1, Hurricane Irene 0

We'll have a more detailed post in the coming week concerning the performance of Philadelphia's green stormwater infrastructure during Hurricane Irene, but the preliminary report from Percy Street—the city's first porous street, unveiled in June—indicates a unanimous victory for this green project:

  • There was no visual evidence of ponding (rainwater collecting in surface pools) on Percy Street during the storm, as the porous pavement handled the rainfall as expected.
  • The gravel bed below the street's surface filled up one inch at one end of the street and did not register any water filling it at the other end, suggesting that the rain was infiltrating the ground below the system as designed.

The Philadelphia Water Department observed several green infrastructure projects—stormwater tree trenches, a porous basketball court and a stormwater basin—during the storm, and we'll report on the results as the data comes in. Check out our Big Green Map to locate a green stormwater project near you.
