Craft Beer of Philly at the Interpretive Center

On Wednesday, June 26th, the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center will host “Craft Brewing in Philadelphia: Past, Present and Future” from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Rich Wagner has been studying the history of brewing in Philadelphia since 1980 and is the author of Philadelphia Beer, a Heady History of Brewing in the Cradle Liberty (History Press 2012). He will share the turbulent history of Philadelphia’s breweries, like when the Schmidt brewery closed in 1987 and for the first time Philadelphia found itself without a brewery. Since then new, small breweries have emerged and made themselves prominent in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Today, the City is home to two operating production facilities. Join us to learn more about Philadelphia’s reputation as a world class brewing center as well as intensive tradition and heritage behind the modern day practices.

This event will include the opportunity to sample several of Philadelphia’s craft beers, so attendees must b over 21 years of age. To order tickets, please visit –

It’s time again to choose Philadelphia’s four legged clean water ambassadors, so head on over to the Spokesdog page to vote for your favorite pooch! Voting for the Spokesdog Competition has officially opened! 54 dogs are competing this year, 21 from University City and 33 from Filter Square. The voting is split between the two neighborhoods, but make sure you cast a ballot for your favorite dog in each! Voting is limited to one vote per hour, so please return to the site to continue voting until Wednesday, July 31st. After the final online votes have been cast, 15 finalists will gather for a Community Competition Day in each neighborhood. A battle of brains, agility and of course, cuteness is guaranteed to ensue. Judges will deliberate and decide on a winner from both University City and Fitler Square at the end of the event. Let the games begin!

The Story of Water - Through Art

Had you been on the 300 block of Christian Street on Saturday afternoon, you might have asked yourself, “What are these blue dots all over the street? Is this graffiti?” You may have walked along the dots down the street - to the Delaware River -looked out across to New Jersey and thought, “This is beautiful, but why I am here?” If you had looked down below you, you may have noticed an outfall, spewing excess rainwater from the streets. However, this is the very end of our story, a story that starts miles away, only to end right below your very feet.

The Mural Arts Program and the Philadelphia Water Department have joined forces to help Philadelphia residents recognize the importance of the water cycle in Philadelphia and they’re doing it through a language everyone understands – art. With the help of environmental artist and sculptor, Stacy Levy, a simple but effective design was created and Saturday marked the first day of installation. With the help of neighbors and friends from The Courts residential community, we traced, cut, painted and even heated (with an intense propane torch) blue dots to the sidewalk and streets. The dots represent water and the design is intended to demonstrate  how water flows over streets and other impermeable surfaces to the inlets, as well as the journey this water takes from the inlets to the Delaware River. Follow the dots downstream and you’ll find yourself facing the Delaware River. The very place a majority of our stormwater runoff ends up.

So the next time you’re near 3rd and Christian Streets (in front of the beautiful Southwark Garden), search the sidewalk for the blue water dots and remember how the story of your water ends.

Learn more about the story of stormwater here.

The Schuylkill Action Network closes Beer Week & the Schuylkill Sojourn with a celebration of Stonefly IPA

This Friday, June 7th, the members of the Schuylkill Sojourn (who are paddling to Pottstown today) will arrive in Philadelphia at Boat House Row. The Schuylkill Sojourn is a weeklong kayaking and camping expedition along the Schuylkill River. The Schuylkill Action Network, a supporter of the Sojourn, has also teamed up with the Saucony Creek Brewing Company on a fun project to protect and highlight the Schuylkill River. Recognizing that good beer requires clean water, the brewery crafted its Stonefly IPA. Named for the Stonefly, an insect that thrives in clean water, the beer not only symbolizes watershed health, but a portion of the proceeds are also donated by the brewery to Schuylkill watershed protection efforts.

The founder and brewer at Saucony Creek Brewing Company will join the Schuylkill Sojourn kayakers on Friday to usher a ceremonial keg of Stonefly IPA down river to a short press conference on the deck of the Fairmount Water Works at 4:30 pm to toast our vital Schuylkill waters.

Following the press conference on Friday, the keg will continue on along the river, this time by bike, to Grace Tavern for a Philly Beer Week Event featuring Stonefly IPA. All are welcome, so come on out and help us protect the Schuylkill River one beer at a time.

Shissler Spray Park Welcomes Its First Guests

Giggles and screams filled the Shissler Recreation Center playground last Thursday. Soaking wet children ran up and down the pavement between beds of ornamental grasses and repurposed mill stones; some, still in their graduation gowns. Thursday May 23rd was a day of celebration for the parents and children of Shissler’s 2013 pre-school graduation. After a long ceremony of singing, dancing and pictures, the students raced out to the playground for the ribbon cutting of Shissler Spray Park. Tentative at first, the children eventually ran in and out of the ground sprinklers, splashing and playing together on the hot May day.

The spray park, a joint initiative between Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and the Mural Arts program, became an official part of ‘The Big Green Block’ in Kensington. The Big Green Block, located just off the Berks El station, is named for all of the environmental features of the area – including the LEED certified Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and PWD green stormwater infrastructure tools (stormwatertree trenches, rain gardens and more). The New Kensington Community Development Corporation (CDC) has further plans to re-do the basketball courts at the neighboring Shissler Recreation Center.Learn more about the creation of Kensington’s big green block here.

Community Art Day - Help Us Create A Lasting Impression!

posted in

This Saturday, June 1st, The Philadelphia Water Department, in partnership with Mural Arts, will host a community art making day in Queen Village at Christian and 3rd Streets. Stacy Levy, renowned environmental artist and sculptor  plans to coordinate the creation of a project highlighting the ways in which water travels under our streets and into the rivers and streams. Community members are encouraged to attend and to help create this one-of-a-kind piece of art work. The plan is to heat and adhere thermoplastic dots of various sizes to the asphalt on the road to create a unique, “water-esque” pattern. The display is expected to last up two years and will be a continuing reminder of the importance of water in Philadelphia. No pre-registration is required. Food, music and other activities will be available for all ages! For more information contact Shari at Shari.Hersh@muralarts.org or 267-972-3934.

Julian Abele Park Grand Reopening

Julian Abele Park: Ribbon Cutting and Grand Reopening from Philadelphia Water Department on Vimeo.

Love your Park week came to a close on Saturday, May 18th with events and festivities around the City. One of these events was the grand reopening of Julian Abele Park in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood. Check out this short video of Shelly Jones, a PWD engineer, speaking about PWD stormwater improvements at the event last weekend. Also, check out Naked Philly’s pre-game coverage for some great photos.

The park has undergone a number of improvements including innovative stormwater management work led by PWD as part of Green City, Clean Waters. The stormwater projects include tree trenches in the sidewalks adjacent to the park with paver accents to match the park's interior design. The tree trenches are designed to manage approximately the first 1.3 inches of rain during a storm. This means that runoff from more than half an acre is managed on site, reducing pollutants that end up in our rivers and streams by keeping stormwater out of the sewer.

City agencies and community advocates worked together to complete the various park improvements including the Department of Public Property (DPP), Parks and Recreation (PP&R), the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), and the Friends of Julian Abele Park. Work was funded through neighborhood fund-raising and a grant from The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
