USACE Features PWD at Local Stream Restoration Workshop

USACE (The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) chose to partner with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) to hold a stream restoration workshop this past July. PWD’s Erik Haniman, manager of the Ecological Restoration Group spoke to representatives from USACE, the EPA, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, The Nature Conservancy and many more. The workshop, led by Dave Derrick and Dr. Rich Fisher of USACE’s Engineer Research and Development Center, featured two of PWD’s restoration projects – Cobb’s Creek and the Tacony Creek. In 2010, PWD worked with USACE to restore the Tacony Creek by constructing several weirs and planting more than 10,000 natives species. To learn more about the July workshop, visit USACE’s website.

A Weekend for the Coast

After you catch a couple of fish at Philly’s Fun Fishing Fest, head downtown for the 2013 Pennsylvania Coast Day, part of the WHYY Connections Festival. This is a free, fun day that the entire family can enjoy! This year’s event boasts kayaking, swan pedal boat rides, ferry rides, the PA Tug Boat Festival, “man overboard” demonstrations and so much more! The day begins at noon on September 7th at the Walnut Plaza on Penn’s Landing. Check out the photo gallery above, provided by the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary of last year’s event. Free shuttles will run from the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, which will also be hosting events, so catch some fish, and then the bus to the 2013 PA Coast Day!

To learn more about Coast Day, visit the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary’s site.

Congratulations to the 2013 SMIP Grant Recipients!

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) are pleased to announce that just under $5 million has been award in grants to promote stormwater management projects. The Stormwater Management Incentives Program (SMIP) was created by The City of Philadelphia, through PWD and PIDC, to help reduce the volume of stormwater runoff entering the City's sewer system and to simultaneously help beautify communities. The grant helps businesses and nonprofits green large, impervious properties and unburden the city’s sewer system from high volumes of stormwater runoff. Stormwater management tools, such as green roofs, porous paving, rain gardens, stormwater tree trenches,  detention and retention basins reduce a property’s impervious surface, also resulting in lower monthly stormwater charges. Read about all of this year’s recipients and their projects here.

The SMIP grant is an important part of the Green City, Clean Waters plan, which includes an ambitious goal to convert 9,500 impervious acres to “green acres” that capture and manage the first inch of stormwater runoff to achieve beautiful, fishable, clean and healthy rivers and streams. The grant will also allow businesses, non-profit organizations and other non-residential customers to reduce their stormwater rates by providing funding for the design and implementation of these green infrastructure projects.

If you are interested in applying for the SMIP grant, please visit the webpage for more information.
