From the Archives: Cutting a 48-inch cast iron pipe, May 16, 1905

PWD Catalogue No. 1986.002.1902

The distribution system put in place to carry Philadelphia’s filtered water supply to every neighborhood in the City, built along with the filter plants in the first decade of the 20th century, included miles of massive pipes this size. This photo shows how such a pipe was cut to the length needed. The steam engine on the right is transmitting power, via the gears and chain, to draw the blade around the pipe. As the blade goes around, the workmen tighten the blade so it cuts deeper and deeper until it cuts through the pipe.

The grinning child in the background may belong to one of the workmen, or to the photographer, or he simply could have been hiding in the pipe until the photographer said “Cheese!” and then popped his head out so he could be in the picture—something we now call “photo-bombing.” He was certainly not the first or the last child to do this, as a number of photos in the PWD Historical collection show, including this one from 1907.

Fishing for Some Fun

Saturday, September 7th was a picture –perfect fall day for the 9th annual Fish Fest. Over 100 anglers of all different ages came out to Schuylkill Banks to compete for Smallest Fish, Largest Fish, and Most Fish Caught. Judges awarded prizes such as deluxe tackle boxes and rods from Plano and Dick’s Sporting Goods to the lucky winners. In total, fishers hauled in eighty-one fish and six different species including Channel Catfish, Bluegill, Striped Bass, American Eel, American Shad and White Perch.

The Philadelphia Water Department partners with the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, Fish & Boat Commission, and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation to host Fish Fest each year.

From the Archives: Work gang in the Torresdale Conduit, December 18th, 1906

PWD Catalogue No. 1986.002.2546

This group of workmen filling a crack in the Torresdale Conduit. They are using slurry of concrete, sometimes called grout, which is being pumped into a crack from the metal basin in the foreground through the nozzle held by the man in the background.

The Torresdale Conduit was built along the Delaware River front in the first decade of the 20th century. It carries filtered water from the Torresdale Filters (now the Baxter Water Treatment Plant) to the Lardner’s Point Pumping Station, which pumps the water into the city’s system of distribution pipes. When they were completed, both the filter plant (covering about 75 acres) and the pumping station (with a capacity of 200 million gallons a day) were each the largest of its kind in the world.

The conduit is about 2.5 miles long and about 10.5 feet in diameter. Constructed of bricks and mortar, it lies about 100 feet underground, and was built completely “in tunnel”, like an underground mining operation, rather than in an open excavation from the surface. To do this, eleven shafts were built along the length of the conduit, connecting the surface with the work area underground. As the construction progressed, excavated material was raised up and removed through these shafts, and construction material was lowered down.

Fourteen people died in the construction of this pipeline, which is still in use and an integral part of the City’s water distribution system.

Early Registration for the VUSP Stormwater Symposium is now open!

The Villanova Urban Stormwater Partnership Symposium will host over 50 concurrent technical presentations on all phases of stormwater management. This year’s symposium, “Stormwater from the Ground Up,” is the 7th of its kind to be held at Villanova and it boasts a plethora of speakers.  Some highlights include E. Christopher Abruzzo, Secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and John Capacasa and Dominique Lueckenhoff of the USEPA Region III. The symposium is planned for October 17th and 18th. Discounted registration is available for early birds until September 25th.

The purpose of the symposium is to advance the knowledge and understanding of sustainable stormwater water management for those who work in all aspects of planning, design, implementation and regulatory compliance. Participants will include engineers, planners, water resource professionals, regional, state, and local government professionals and watershed and conservation groups.  Tours of BMPs will be provided, including an Urban Stormwater Tour hosted by PWD!

To read more about the conference, visit VUSP’s website. You can also find links to registration and tickets on their site as well.

Gardens Save Dollars and Make Sense

This Saturday, September 7th, you can explore the green garden oases of South Philadelphia with the South Philadelphia Food Co-op. The Co-op is hosting their 3rd annual South Philly Self-Guided Garden Tour from 1 to 5pm. This past month they’ve been counting down the days with all of the different ways gardens save the city dollars and benefit our well-being. Their latest post featured an aspect that is near and dear to our hearts here at the Water Department…stormwater management! Gardens help absorb rainwater that would typically flow into our sewer inlets and streams. By absorbing the water, gardens help filter and mitigate stormwater pollution and combined sewer overflows. Read more about how South Philly gardens are helping to manage stormwater here and view the rest of the South Philly Garden Tour Countdown here. If you’re interested in attending the tour, be sure to grab your tickets now, this is the South Philly Co-op’s biggest fundraiser of the year!

And if you don’t have enough to do already, between your garden tour and the Fish Fest, make sure you check out Coast Day down at Penn’s Landing!

The Water Department is making waves! Earlier this week we mentioned Erik Haniman working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and today we’d like to feature, Maggie Wood, an Environmental Planner with the Public Affairs department. This week Maggie presented the Philadelphia’s Water Department’s new residential stormwater management program, Rain Check, at the 2013 International Low Impact Development Symposium at the University of Minnesota. The symposium featured 290 presentations and over 1,000 attendees, the largest LID Symposium to date. The conference offers a unique opportunity for stormwater experts of all backgrounds to gather and discuss stormwater issues and projects from around the world.
