Cost of Rain Check Stormwater Tools

The Water Department will help you pay for the cost of these stormwater tools. Rain Barrels are free and participants can get a rain barrel in addition to any of the other tools.

Our goal is to keep as much stormwater as possible out of the sewer system, so the amount PWD pays is generally based on the amount of water managed by these tools. Each tool costs a different amount to install. The chart below provides some average costs you can expect from a contractor for each tool. The amount that PWD pays is fixed. You pay the balance of the cost.  These costs are examples, and can change depending on your property.

Note: These prices are effective 2/25/2016.

*The cost for depaving only includes the removal of the existing surface. Depending on what you choose to replace the surface (stone, landscaping, etc) the price will increase.

Pricing Examples

Note: The examples below are estimates based on the approximate cost of installations. The cost of your actual installation - and how much you will need to pay - will vary depending on the complexity of the work and how easy it is to access your property.

Flat Fee
Downspout Planter:
Participants pay $100 ($25 downpayment, then $75) for all standard downspout planter installations. If the installation requires significant additional work such as re-directing the gutter or downspout, the cost may increase.

Payment Per Square Foot
Rain Garden:
If you wanted to install a 100 sq ft rain garden, the total cost of the job would be around $1,700 dollars. PWD would contribute $1,600 to the job and you would pay $100.00.

De-paving:
If you wanted to remove 100 sq ft of paving, the total cost of the job would be around $1,500 dollars. PWD would contribute $800 to the job and you would pay $700.00.

Porous Paving:
If you wanted to replace 100 sq ft of concrete with porous pavers, the total cost of the job would be around $3,000 dollars. PWD would contribute $1,500 to the job and you would pay $1,500.00.

PWD Maximum Contribution
If you wanted to de-pave or install a rain garden or porous pavement and PWD sq. ft. cost goes beyond $2,000, the Water Department will only pay $2,000. For example: if you wanted to install a 200 sq ft rain garden, the total cost of the job would be around $3,400 dollars. PWD would contribute $2,000 and  you would pay $1,400.00.
